| Time Magazines "Hero of the Environment" Jack Sim writes article for PolicyNet At age fifty-one, Jack Sim has accomplished more than most will in their lifetime. Having founded the internationally recognized World Toilet Organization in 2001 to improve global sanitation and health, Jack is now pursuing a Master's of Public Administration at Lee Kuan Yew where he works in close collaboration with the Institute for Water Policy. Recently Jack was named "Hero of the Environment" by Time Magazine and has written an exclusive article for us. Not one to shy away from expressing his opinion, Jack's article takes aim at unresponsive and ineffective global governance which he argues is caused by "BureauCrazy", a condition characterized by endless discussion and lack of concrete action. As noted by Jack, "From the World Economic Forum to a war-torn disaster zone, from the UN in New York to the child dying in a new slum, we know the issues, and you may be surprised here, but we do know the solutions too. Yet, the best brains and highest powers could not solve these problems. Instead, we carry on talking, one big conference following another. We risk becoming professional "Meeters"!" GIIS Launches Two New Initiatives February has been a busy month for the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies which, in addition to establishing a new joint LL.M degree with the Georgetown University Law Center in Global Health Law and International Institutions; has also undertaken a new research program on Global Migration and Refugee's funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). The Global Health Law and International Institutions LL.M. programme will bring together two institutions at the cutting edge of global health law and diplomacy. Students will begin at Georgetown, with either one full-time semester, or up to three part-time semesters, and will complete the programme with a full-time spring semester at the Graduate Institute. For more information on the new joint law program with Georgetown, please view the Graduate Institute's press release here. The new research program on Global Migration and Refugee's will be administered through the Graduate Institute's Programme for the Study of Global Migration and will conduct a historical review of UNHRC data from 1951-1989. Some of the many interesting questions which this project hopes to answer are: How did UNHCR manage to overcome its original limitations to intervene globally and how did it face the inherent practical and legal challenges linked to this expansion? How did UNHCR manage to uphold its "entirely non-political" character in often highly politicized and militarized international, regional and local contexts? and How did UNHCR relate to other UN Agencies and International Organizations, as well as non-governmental organizations?
